Killer Robots
Killer robots isn't something I have really worried about or even thought about in the past. Now that it has drawn my attention, I think that we should think more about these autonomous weapons.
After doing some more research on killer robots, I was able to get a better understanding of what they really are. According to Human Rights Watch, many countries including the United States, United Kingdom, China and South Korea are making and using "killer robots." Armed drones being the main form of these weapons are being used in warfare. Could these lethal technological killers lead to something terrible beyond our control?
According to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, these robots are, "morally repugnant and politically unacceptable." More countries are noticing this issue and speaking on it in order to make change. A non-governmental group known as The Campaign to Stop Killer Robots, is also acting upon this as an issue that needs to be dealt with.

I can personally understand why these drones were invented. To keep more of our soldiers safe in combat. However I can also see why this could be an issue and the dangers of it. If there is a malfunction, who knows what these killer robots are capable of. It is a concerning idea that I believe needs to be taken into account.
Many people are worried about these killer robots and what they can do if not accounted for. Accountability seems to be the word that keeps coming up in my research. Are we accountable enough to handle these robots? If so, why are people making this a big deal.
At first, I thought that it wasn't something to be concerned about. I now know that we do need to be aware and accountable. These weapons that are being used can be very dangerous and could lead to conflicts including war. The future is in our hands and we need to make sure that we know what we are dealing with here. Killer robots need to be looked at more carefully and treated as a dangerous weapon.

John, do you know of any specific stories of drones and problems that have occurred because of them? or stories of how they have helped?
ReplyDeleteThat's a very interesting blog post John, I have a question about if the "killer robots" are mainly drones or are their other robots that would be considered dangerous If so what other robots are dangerous and should be under regulation?
ReplyDeleteThanks Nick! From the research that I have done, most of the "killer robots" were referred to as drones in military combat. However, through technology and innovation, other robots could be produced which could be very dangerous if not taken seriously and carefully.
DeleteI think the question is what draws the line with these "killer robots". When is it okay to use them in war and when not to. Kind of like nuclear weapons. I do think that drones are a more effective and conservative of people but you may waste a lot of money and robots don't have brains so it would be hard to control them without some miss functions or mistakes in there system
